Call for Applications:
Artist in Residence, Spring 2012
Alphonse Mattia and Steve Loar are seeking a talented individual who will contribute their
energies and talents as an ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE (AIR).
As a Visiting Assistant Professor the AIR will teach an Intermediate Woodworking course and
be provided with a personal bench space with full access to all of the Center facilities. The total
contract for the combined efforts is $17,000. A minimum commitment of January 23 through
May 10, 2012 is necessary. In addition to developing a new body of work in great facilities, the
teaching component offers many the chance to transform a short workshop concept into a longer robust experience, and for those without teaching experience it offers a rare chance to establish university teaching credentials along with evidence of student work.
An MFA in furniture, woodworking, or directly related topics is preferred although not
absolutely essential. Some experience with woodturning would be ideal. A receptive attitude
toward being mentored for the curriculum development and the teaching of the course is also
desirable. The AIR will also be expected to present at least one outreach event.
The AIR will be expected to commit at least 4 days of active work in the studio, per week
(including the teaching component). It is desireable that the Woodworking course will exploit the
individual's special talents and areas of expertise. As a 3-credit Studio Art elective the course
will have 5-contact hours per week with a typical enrollment of 12 Art students.
Additional support will be in the form of an office space, university library access, and the use of
the Center's dedicated Resource Center and computers. A complete woodworking studio/shop
and a dedicated turning studio have been recently enhanced with a sliding table saw, a laser
engraver, a CNC router, a small metal working area, a vacuum press, and an upholstery area that includes a commercial sewing machine.
IF INTERESTED, please make application with:
• letter of intent
• full resume/vita
• at least 20 images of work (Additional samples of any previous student work will be a plus.)
