Visiting Artists & Residents
Several visiting artists are invited each year to IUP to share their professional expertise and experiences with our students and faculty. The purpose is to enrich our program of study with new perspectives, innovation, and applications in creative turning and furniture development. In the past, IUP has hosted a variety of artists that include Fatie Atkinson, Wendell Castle, Stephen Hogbin, David Ellsworth, Stoney Lamar, Giles Gilson, Mark Sfirri, John Jordan, Robert Meadows, Robert Strini, and Robert Sonday.
The Center has had the pleasure of hosting artist and guest juror, Gary Knox Bennet. Gary spent several days speaking with students about thier work, current trends in the industry, and experiencing the area.
In addition, a permanent Artist-in-Residence program was initiated in January 2006. Featured artists are invited to teach for an entire semester while continuing their professional studio work in the studios of the Center. The first resident was turner and sculptor Betty Scarpino. For many years, Betty has been considered one of the premier artists in her field, winning numerous awards and gallery exhibitions.
Recently furniture maker and upholsterer, Annie Evelyn, joined us at the Center. Her eclectic style and unique appraoch was a fresh presence in the studio.
This position is ongoing, giving students the opportunity to study with several master artists during their time at IUP.
